Wizcom QuickLink Elite Pen Scanner E04087

1 stars (USB doesn't work) - I tried the CD to install the USB connection between pen and PC. Failed so many times. I tried for one month, I decided to return it. And I hope I still can get full refund. 1 stars (Doesn't work with OS X) - I want to like this thing, but I can't, for it does not work at all with OS X. So, if, like me, you run Apples, just pass on by this page because the thing will not work for you. 3 stars (Not as good as the C-Pen 800C) - I'm measuring, first and foremost, ease and precision of scanning. Speed of scanning and ease of installation on the computer are, in my mind, about the same for both this, the Wizcom QuickLink Elite, and the C-Pen 800C. They differ sufficiently, however, in the primary question of ease and quality of scanning. For the record, I bought both at the same time, with the intent of keeping the better of the two. You can just go ahead and buy the C-Pen 800C. I have had one horrible experience with a pen scanner by Siemens, the "Pocket Reader." It was truly useless. It scanned so poorly that I just put it aside. By the time I though to return it, Siemens was no longer making it, and I couldn't get customer service here in the U.S. The Wizcom QuickLink Elite is not so bad. It's serviceable. I don't think it lives up to its 95% accuracy guarantee, but perhaps meets a 90% threshold, measured impressionistically. It's interface is also reasonable and satisfactory. However, the C-Pen 800C is even more precise, truly approaching 95%. Moreover, if you discount errors in spacing from this accuracy percentage, its precision is even higher. Whereas the Wizcom is just as likely to make a content error, misread letters, etc., the 800C's errors are more likely to be the absence of a space when there should be one. A rare missed space doesn't make you puzzle over the text when you come back to it two months later. C-Pen is also lighter, and it's rechargeable, so while it's more expensive, in the long run, you'll save on batteries. Bo...

2 stars (Wicom SuperPen pro) - I am really disappointed with the item. The wireless feature is NOT really wireless. You can only beam about 10 -20 words via infrared. With all the new technology it is way behind the consumer expectations that you still have to use a cable to transfer data. I can not see that it would take that much to fix the problem, so the enduser will be able to use the infrared for data transfers. I wonder if they never heard about bluetooth technology either. It takes some time to get used to the pen, scanner recognition is about 80% ok. IF YOU SCAN REALLY SLOW! For that the company calls them self "world leader in personal, portable scanning pens" I think that there is a lot of room for the competition to the real leader!!!!!!!!!!! 3 stars (just alright) - this is a good item if you have poor handwriting but take notes from books. Some what difficutlt to operate initially but with practice is helpful if you like to keep track of small passages. Is it worth it. depends on how much you use it. 5 stars (great scanning, good IR connectivity) - I've had it for a day and have not even attempted to connect via cable to the PC. BTW, the unit came with serial cable, and Wizcom is sending a USB cable for free. I am hapy with IR. I beam scanned text to my PDA and the PC. I can also receive text files from the PDA and the PC. It has two main functions Dictionary/Thesaurus and scanning text to be trasfered. I bought it primarily for the first option and i order to hear pronunciation of and meaning of words I do not recongize. Its speaker is not too loud, so you need to bring it closer to the ear, but it has regular L/R earbuds with volume. I set the options to automatically pronounce a word after I scan it and show definitions. Medical, Computer, Wall Street, etc dictionaries are alredy pre-loaded. Wizcom SP1000V SuperPen Translator

4 stars (Efficient addition to an abridged dual-language dictionary) - The superpen SP1000 is easy to setup and works almost as well as advertised. I have the version that supports bilingual dictionaries. The pen came with a CD and a serial cable to connect to the computer. If you plan to transfer data to, or load dictionaries from, a laptop, check that your laptop has a serial port. The pen is supposed to support IR as well, but my laptop does not detect it (though I didn't really try to make this feature work). I installed the software from CD onto my Windows XP machine and connected the pen with the cable. After setting the pen to use the PC connection I was able to choose my dictionaries and load them onto the pen. The dictionaries took a couple of minutes apiece to load. Due to memory space taken by the applications that are pre-loaded on the pen I was only able to load 2 dictionaries at a time. I believe (not sure) the pro version has more memory so I would suggest investigating that version if you study more than one language or want to use dictionaries with other features like note-taking. I tried scanning both left-handed and right-handed. In left-handed mode it is easier to see where to place the scanning point in front of the word. The pen rolls smoothly and the character recognition worked well even in a book that is not completely flat and has smallish type. It is difficult to capture a short word by itself, but scanning several words at a time works well for capturing short words. The pen display allows you to scroll across the scanned words, showing the definition for each word in turn. I have two reasons for giving the product less than 5 stars. When scanning French the pen does not always accurately identify reflexive verbs preceded by an apostrophe, e.g., s'asseoir should be recognized as a reflexive verb asseoir with a preceding s'. Wizcom InfoScan IS1000 Pen Scanner

4 stars (Works as billed) - Before I bought this pen I looked at most of the reviews for other hand held scanners on the market. It seems to be the case that either they works or they don't. In my case it seems to work perfect. Well perfect as in about 5 mistakes in about a hundred words, in other words abouth 1 in 20. This actually isn't as bad as it seems and perhaps I expected the worst but I find this quite tolerable and readable. In addition if the reviews I read are correct, there is a slight learning curve so hopefully it will get better. I haven't had a lot of time to play with the software but is seems to work pretty seamlessly in a Win XP box with SP 2 installed. Install the software, plug in the USB cable, plug in the pen and voila it works (actually it didn't work the first time but it turned out that I hadn't pushed the pen side plug in fully, it should click) Overall it works as billed and for $90-$25 rebate = $65 its a bargain in comparison to the c-pens which start at $165 !!
