The Conscious Reader- Ninth Edition

3 stars (Lit teacher) - The book does provide a diverse range of genre. It works well as a literature textbook. However, the quality of the book binding is poor. Students purchase this $50+ textbook only to have chunks of it fall out before the end of the semester. I suppose the publisher sells more textbooks that way, since few books are resold as used books, but I can't recommend it for just that reason. 5 stars (College English Class) - Great Book....even though the CRAZY PROFESSOR I HAD USED 15 of the essays and some poems. THE ESSAYS WERE INTERESTING AND FUN. 5 stars (An excellent textbook for first-year college students.) - This book provides a good range of diverse materials for a teacher in a first year English course. There are multiple genres and themes, a section of famous paintings for discussions (useful for discussions on literature and art), among other helpful features. The Conscious Reader is an antidote to readers which have the same standard writing for student use. ...

Technical Communication 10th Edition

5 stars (teacher ed. unexpected) - i was supprised that it was the teachers edition but it will still be usefull thanks 3 stars (This book is better than what some reviewers write!) - This book is written well and is a useful tool to use when writing everything from a resume and cover letter to a complete proposal. It also give instructions on how to make a web page and scripting in html. Although I am sure that this material is very similiar to that of the previous editions, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to write better. I wish that I had not read the previous bad reviews and ordered this book in hardcover instead of a used softcover. 1 stars (Written by an expert in the marketing of textbooks!) - John Lannon was a successful author of a college writing and composition textbook. He then created various spinoffs so that his publisher could cover more markets: business writing, technical writing, and so on (for both college and high school). So he's really not a current specialist in technical writing, and he's not employed as a technical writer. He's just an English instructor who has been using essentially the same basic materials in all his books for decades. This text is a perfect example. It has very little to do with today's field of technical communications. There are many other textbooks that have more specific and up-to-date examples and guidelines for contemporary technical writers. Any book by Hackos, for example, runs circles around this one. In any case, he and his publisher don't need your single-copy sale. They sell thousands of these books for coursewide use at many schools across the country for use in very elementary courses. They don't care about individual users. So save your money and buy something else! ...

An Introduction to Literature- 13th Edition

4 stars (Great for my Literature Class. . . BUT) - I bought this book for my college Literature class, overpaid as usual too. After a semester of use, the cover is falling apart, the pages are thin and rip easily and all of the paper is of a material that is hard to clean pencil marks from. However, it is a great book. It contains a wealth of poems, stories and advice between the poorly-made pages. And, since the pages are thin, it wasn't as heavy to lug around campus. Very good content though, as I said. The stories are multi-national, there is abstract and realistic, old-fashioned and very modern, some ancient and even the lyrics to 1960's folk songs! One of my favorite lines in the book is "Margaret are you weeping over golden grove unleafing?" I also like the old sailors poem Western Wind "Western wind when wilt though blow? The small rain down can rain. Christ that my love were in my arms and I in my bed again." Perhaps it helps that my literature professor is top notch and a noted author as well (Kent Meyers "The Work of Wolves") but he really made me love this book! There is gold within these pages, a very good choice for teaching college students to truly appreciate the many genres of literature from around the world and through the ages. 1 stars (Misleading) - I ordered the 13th edition and received the 5th edition. The order was clearly placed for the 13th edition; it had the caption, picture and everything, when I ordered. Then When I received the wrong book I e-mailed back to see what happened and they replied that I didn't see their small caption at the bottom that read 5th edition. This captioned was not available when I purchased the book. 2 stars (Helpful for my Lit class. Book VERY POORLY MADE!!!) - This book was very useful for my Introduction to Literature class. (Naturally) Contains works from many of the great authors. I am VERY,VERY disapointed in the overall quality of the book. DON'T BUY THE PAPER BACK EDITION. Get it in hard back if you c...

A Short Guide to Writing About Art 7th Edition

3 stars (Useful in some ways, not in others.) - I recently read the 6th edition of this book in hopes that it would help me to improve my ability to understand and write about art. I found that the book is a direct, well-written primer for someone finishing high school or beginning their undergraduate degree, but for someone with a bit more experience, it turns out to be a mixed bag. I know next to nothing about visual art. I'm the quintessential "knows what I likes, and likes what I knows" type of guy. On the other hand, I'm a graduate student in English, so I'm well-practiced in writing essays and in applying various theoretical and critical methods. I read this book in the hopes that it would help me to better understand art. That is, I wanted to learn, as Sylvia Barnet puts it, "How does art mean?" The beginning of the text does introduce some basic questions and ways to think about different kinds of art, ranging from painting, to sculpture, to architecture, to photography, to video art, etc. However, this is not meant to be an instructional book to teach someone about art. It is more like an assistant text for a freshman-level art history course. A great deal of the book is spent discussing how to organize essays, sentence structure, revising, formatting, and some instruction on critical methods. But, again, this book is not a book on writing. It's not about art, it's not about writing, so what is it? Well, like it says, it's about writing about art. A good deal of this book was useless to me, but some of it was enlightening. If you've already got some experience studying the visual arts, or some experience writing, or you just want a really indepth study on either, pick out something else. If, however, you just want an easily understood, basic primer on writing and art, this isn't a bad choice at all. 1 stars (points out the obvious) - A professor highly recommended this book to my art history class. I was disappointed in it. I had hoped it would offer some ...

The Longman Reader 6th Edition

4 stars (A Good Freshman Composition Reader) - While I am just starting to use this edition (6th) of the text, I have been happy with The Macmillan Reader since I began using the 5th edition in 1999. The chapters on academic reading and the writing process are thorough (but a bit dry), and the portions of the text that deal with each method of development are well-developed and thought out so as to help students get the best idea of what a "good" essay of each variety should and shouldn't include. The essays that are included are a wonderful assortment of old, tried-and-true and newer pieces from authors of varying backgrounds, ethnicities, and creeds. Students usually enjoy the readings I give them (I'd say 80% approval per piece), and with the average length being 5 pages, reading an essay for class and completing a journal entry is not too heavy of a burden any night of the week. The readings vary from "perfect" examples of what the text describes to even a few "what not to do when you write your own" essays that my students never fail to identify as such. I feel that this is, by far, the best reader I have used while teaching Freshman English (this is my fourth text), and I plan on sticking with it for years to come. The price is moderate, the readings enjoyable, and the "educational" chapters stated in a way that both the slowest and most advanced student in the class can come to the same understanding of what "good writing" is. 4 stars (Worth It!) - This may be a textbook, but it is definately worth buying. The instructions on writing were clear and helpful, and the essays were wonderful. I can honestly say that I liked almost every essay in the book! ...

The Elements of Style- Fourth Edition

5 stars (timeless) - The Elements of Style is one of the most important books that I own. Although I'm out of college, I refer to it again and again. Even if I'm not correcting grammar or punctuation, I'll still open the book to see what beautiful writing looks like. The writing is so darn clear that I often joke, "If God wanted someone to teach Jesus how to write, God would have hired Strunk and White." The last chapter deals with writing and how to craft one's own voice. This is valuable for everyone, and although Elements isn't a "how to" book on fiction writing, I've found S&W's advice to be sound while working on novels and short stories. Keep this book in your coat pocket. Study it at red lights or on the subway. This book is timeless. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie." 4 stars (A Classic) - It's funny, when I was studying creative writing with Frank McCourt, there was no mention of this book in his classroom. And in my conversations with Neil Strauss, "Style" himself never once brought up this book on Style. Who is it, then, that reads this little manual? Academics? Everything it says is important, but the most imporant aspect of great writing is clear and engaging communication. You can read this book, but you might do better to read the best writers. McCourt, Strauss, Hemingway, Hunter S. Thompson, E.L. Doctrow, Tom Wolfe -- now there's a syllabus for learning the elements of Style. 5 stars (Great! There is nothing else to be said about this book) - This is a short book that deserves a short review: buy it, read it, trust it. You will write better after doing what it says you should do. Your text will be shorter too, which makes it better yet. ...

Literature for Composition- Essays- Fiction- Poetry- and Drama 6th Edition

3 stars (Literature for Dummies) - This is by all means a decent anthology of literature for an introductory course, and a fairly respectable stab at a guide to good university writing. The selections are for the most part diverse, encompassing Native-American, African-American, Canadian, and English writers. Short fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction and, to a more limited degree, film get a fairly decent treatment here, too, encompassing chronolical - literature from the classical to the contemporary period is treated - and thematic terrain, making this a worthwhile text for students who simply want a brief introduction to all aspects of English. Still, it is a bit unwieldly, and too often feels less like a solid anthology, and more like an 'English-for-beginners' type deal. You get what you pay for, I guess. ...

The Little- Brown Compact Handbook- Fifth Edition

5 stars (Well Done) - Thank you Amazon! Great Product, great price, making my college books very reasonable. 5 stars (A great resource) - I ordered this book because it was on a list of required texts for a class I am currently enrolled in. I wish I had this book years ago; it would have helped a great deal in high school and in the time since then in college and even in helping my younger brother to write his reports. Not only does it give the basic mechanics of writing but it also completely explains the MLA, APA, and Chicago styles of documentation. Each section has a thumb tab and an index for ease in finding needed info. 5 stars (Misplaced Parts, Dangling Modifiers) - The LITTLE, BROWN COMPACT HANDBOOK is one of those essential resources that no writer, email user, student, or English speaker should be without. This current edition in particular is designed to be useful, both in its compact overall size as well as in its plastic comb binding which allows any page to be opened flat upon the desk alongside a keyboard while typing. In addition to its clearly-written and comprehensive treatment of grammar rules and punctuation, the LITTLE, BROWN COMPACT HANDBOOK contains highly useful sections on formatting and citation styles (MLA, APA, etc.), research methods, and methods for effective and persuasive argument formation. All sections are conveniently tabbed for quick access to the information you need. I highly recommend this excellent reference for anyone looking to improve the quality of their writing. Jeremy W. The Little- Brown Handbook- Ninth Edition

5 stars (The Little Brown Book) - As a student and instructor, I never ever write a paper without using this book. I have used it since 2002 and each edition is better and better. My highlighter never stops when finding important ways to quote authors, annotate references, and where to use semi colons. 5 stars (Oldie but Goodie) - This was a required book for one of my college courses a hundred years ago. Out of all the college books I ended up keeping, this goes on the top of the list. This is a necessary book for anyone writing anything. As an advanced freelance writer, I still refer to it from time to time, and probably always will. 5 stars (Essential tool for all wordsmiths, not just students) - Although intended primarily for students, The Little Brown Handbook is an excellent reference for all nonfiction writers. While writing my own recent book on option pricing, I consulted it often regarding the use of colons, semicolons, dashes, and other fine points of punctuation. It even served as an arbiter of correct grammar and usage in the occasional dispute with my copy editor! Almost everything critical to good writing is covered--from organization, paragraph coherence, and sentence structure, to punctuation, word choice, and issues of style--and in sufficient detail to be useful to the working wordsmith. Guidelines for academic writers, a discussion of the American Psychological Association (APA) style employed in the social sciences, and suggestions for use of the internet in research, also appear in The Little Brown Handbook. All in all, this book should be found near the Strunk and White classic, The Elements of Style, on any writer's bookshelf. I would unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone who writes, either for pleasure or for a living. Jeffrey Owen Katz, Ph.D. Author (With Donna L. Writing Fiction 6th Edition

5 stars (Review?) - This is not a review - but I have a question. DOESN'T ANYBODY WHO REVIEWS AT AMAZON KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REVIEW AND AN OPINION????? I get utterly frustrated at all of your opinions and I still don't know what's IN the book most of the time. Go read up on how to REVIEW a book before you enter stuff here and waste our time! 2 stars (Are YOU ready to write mediocre *blah* fiction?) - First let me say that I am not a mean person. I am sure Ms. Burroway is doing her best to teach people how to write here. And look, the book is popular, and it's sold a lot of copies so that's something, right? Well, popularity is not enough for me. And I would hope it's not enough for other smart consumers too -- professors and students alike. This book shares a virtue in common with many other fine American textbooks these days -- it takes up a lot of space to say disappointingly little. It's structured thusly: The author covers all the elements of fiction, one after the other, in a very cursory manner, interspersing between her thoughts a few mildly inspiring, mildly relevant quotes from a few "Important Writers." Now the author's commentary on the elements of fiction is why I bought the book. I wanted to know about the elements of fiction and how I can use and fuse them to help me build legendary, immaculate fiction. Some of the commentary here, though not so original, is helpful. The author has clearly read up on the topic, and she doesn't do a terrible job distilling the basics. But each chapter left me wanting. These mini-essays are sparse, folks, sparse, and they won't get you past Fiction Writing 101. After each fiction element is discussed, the author then presents a selection of short stories which feature the techniques discussed. Theory in practice. Not such a bad idea -- in theory. But in practice, this idea doesn't work so well, because the author's taste for fiction is generally (excuse me) mundane, to put it kindly. ...

Short History of the Movies- A 9th Edition

5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. The book is a clear, well written and systematically organized history of movies. It has a comprehensive and up to date bibliography and filmography. Chapters are chronological in sequence, but are organized around a particular theme. The authors introduce major influences in the cinema (whether directors, 'schools', actors or events), identify principal directors and films, and analyse major issues and advances. It is an excellent introduction to the history of movies and great jumping off point for further, more specialised study. It is refreshingly free from post-modernist jargon and abstractions. If you want a comprehensive introduction which is also a good read, I recommend this book most highly. 5 stars (Extremely valuable) - My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum 9th Edition

5 stars (The best apparatus out there) - This cut down by more than half the time it has taken my students to learn to write summaries, integrate sources, understand argument, and write syntheses. Many of the readings are also interesting and productive, especially those on Folklore and Obedience to Authority. I'd teach it in combination with a course reader, though, since there's almost no attention to the process of helping students find their voice and write more beautiful prose. But no one book can do everything, and I plan to keep teaching this one. My students like it too -- with its focus on arguable ideas and the wonderful step-by-step breakdown of the writing process. ...
