Adobe Acrobat 7 0 Standard Upgrade from Standard Version 4-6 Mac

4 stars (A Good Reason to Upgrade) - Acrobat 7 Standard on the Mac offers nearly all the features of Acrobat 7 Professional. The windows version of Professional includes a whole extra program (livecycle designer) for creating forms and using xml data. The Mac version does not include that program. However, Professional does offer a couple of very important features: 1) The first is building indexes of documents. Indexing is similar to a search but is much more powerful. An index is a pre-built catalog of all the words in your document, saved as a separate file. After the index is built, whenever you want to search a document, you search the index instead, and searches are almost instantaneous. Searching a regular pdf without an index is quite slow. The real power of the index comes when you index multiple pdf's at once. You could have 100 reports, or a dozen books, or whatever, pre-indexed, and any future search is very very fast. Indexing is definitely a slick feature and an impressive trick if you create content for end users or clients. 2) The other important feature is mostly for the advertising/design/print community. Acrobat Pro allows a lot of interaction with press-ready files. You can view separations, preflight documents, and chop large pages into smaller pieces and print any portion of a page you like. If you work with documents for a living, the Professional version is almost a must-have. Finally....speed. Version 7 is still slow to load. But on a Mac you can leave your computer on for weeks at a time and just leave Acrobat running, so that's not too big of a deal. You can speed up load times by de-activating plug-ins that you don't use. If you just use Acrobat to just view documents, you don't need a lot of the plug-ins. If you use Acrobat professionally, I'd leave the plug-ins active. Do a Get Info on the Acrobat program, click open the Plug-ins tab, and you can uncheck plug-ins to deactivate. 4 stars (Adobe Acrobat 7 standard) - It has some nice upgrades from version 6. It is quicker than the previous version. Highlighting text is a bit easier. It caused a few problems with my officejet 5510xi and its ports, but I found a patch for the officejet and all is well. It is a product that is helpful in my work. 4 stars (Cleaner look and feel) - The new Adobe Acrobat has a cleaner look and feel, and is more user-friendly. I especially apreciate the new quick distiller buttons in any Microsoft application, which allow you to create a PDF in one click rather than having to go to File and Print. Some functionality as before, with some new organization and better look/feel. 5 stars (Best yet) - After using 7.0 for a few weeks I find that this is the best yet. The speed of opening attachments and the compression when making them is fabulous. I highly recommend anyone to upgrade to 7.0. ...

3 stars (Cannot Summarize and Print ONLY PAGES WITH COMMENTS!) - Aside from being great for making PDF files and the usual stuff I just found this one major problem. If you try to summarize comments and print them (or save as a separate file) you get every page "even if it doesn't have a comment on it"! I just found this little snafu after printing out 240 pages when I only needed the 5 pages that actually had comments! I only want to print JUST THE PAGES THAT HAVE COMMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM. I don't need a page after every page that has no comments that says "This page has no comments"! DUH! What a waste of my time and paper! Why the heck did Adobe change this from version 6 to 7?? 2 stars (Very mixed feelings...,) - I use PDFs a lot and I must say that quite often I turn to Free PDF software to actually do the tasks that Acrobat fails to do. One area I have always had a problem with is the formatting of some documents in size and sometimes Acrobat simply fails to recognize them and so I switch to the Free PDF software which has no problems doing this and is easier to use. However if you are a pro PDF maker who wants to add sigs and links and notes and chapters and all the other function tags including security tags then I recommend this product hands down as the best one. I just find that it is not always the best PDF software package in the world, but a good one all the same. I would not recommend buying this one just to make standard PDF files alone.
