Norton AntiVirus 2006

1 stars (Please do not buy this product!) - A friend of mine was having trouble with their PC (computer would reboot during startup continually, relatively new PC). After doing a full HD format, XP reinstall (including all updates) everything worked fine. However, after installing Norton 2006 Antivirus the computer slowed down considerably and after two-three startup / shutdown sequences would begin to reboot during startup again (i.e. never get to the Start menu). I reinstalled XP three times (plus did hardware diagnostic checks). Norton 2006 has to have some bugs in it as XP runs fine until Norton 2006 is installed. I concluded that the problem was Norton as I shut off the AV monitoring through msconfig and the computer worked fine. There were no errors when I installed the product. I did a final reformat etc. but put on a competitor's antivirus product and now have no problems at all. I have been using Norton products for 10 years and been working with PC's for over 20. I had installation issues with Systemworks 2005 but stuck with the product. Once I saw the problems with Norton 2006 (thankfully not on my PC) I took Norton off my own computer and switched to something else (with one month left on my subscription). Don't waste your time with this, there are other options that work. 2 stars (AV 2006 intallation and registration problems) - I have installed it, removed it and re-installed it. It finally said the product was activated. but it was not as the subscription was marked as expired before I began. By calling an 800 number I was finally able to get an unlock key and the activation/subscription issue was resolved. It has never managed to register the product key on their server. I tkeeps sayning cant do that now try again later. If you allow it to scan for some of the things other than virus, worms, adware and spyware, it get hung up in scanning the _Restore directory. The New Concise History of the Crusades- Revised Edition

4 stars (Insight in medieval history) - The New Concise History shows a good view on the Medieval 'madness' in which thoudands and thousands of people wandered through Europe, disorganised, plundering and pillaging, without the organisational powers of the former Roman armies driven by religious fanatism. It also gives insight into the current situation of the Middle East. Once the christian knights of Europe were not far from the Jihad warriors of today...Wruthless, without compassion, murdering anyone that had not the Christian faith. Especially the Jews of Germany had to endur in the start of the Crusads....In so far af very good and readable book. The author does not use any difficult language, myself being from Holland, and it gives a very good oversight and insight into Europe around the year 1000... 5 stars (GOOD WORK TO GET YOU STARTED ) - As other reviewers have pointed out, there are pros and cons to this particular work. I have some reservations myself, but overall, found the work good. This work does indeed give us a good, if somewhat brief, overview of the crusades. The author does present some ideas that are a bit different than than those that have been traditionally taught, and for the most part, unquestioned. This, in my opinion is a good thing as it makes us all think. On the other hand, I am not enough of an expert to be able to verify with any validity some of his statements. I do feel the author tried to be fare. On the other hand he tells us "research" is able to give us much more insight as to what was in the hearts and minds of men and women several centuries ago. I find this hard to beleave at times. I also felt the author sort of fluffed over and flitted through some pretty important aspects of the crusades. The act of completely obliterating city after city and the killing of hundreds of innocent people, really deserves more than one or two sentences. For people who make extended use of Outlook categories and subfolders, being able to carry those into the Palm is invaluable. Support, though, is lousy. I had occasion to try when I started getting an "unexpected error" on synching my contacts which corrupted by home PC's Outlook contacts. The access to email support is hidden in web pages, only showing up once the user has browsed limited and un-helpful FAQs. I never was able to find a telephone number for support. And, despite claims on that response should be forthcoming by next business day, I've been waiting a week now with no response. 5 stars (Best outlook companion) - This is the best outlook companion I have seen. ScanSoft OmniPage 15 OCR

1 stars (Unstable, expensive support) - I purchased this product two weeks ago to convert some PDF files to searchable format. When I could get the OCR to start it did a good job of converting the text. The interface was difficult to use, and in about 20% of the runs the application would hang before beginning the conversion. When I attempted to use set up batch scans the system crashed while I was configuring it in 100% of the runs. I would have reported the problem to technical support, but the publisher charges per incident. To be fair they do offer to wave the charge for the first incident, but since the program crashed in the first five minutes of use it seemed like I would be contacting support more than once. I finally took advantage of the 30-day money back guarantee (I'd highly recommend checking that this applies if you're thinking about buying the program) and purchased Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 instead. 4 stars (Appears to be a significant improvement over OmniPage 14) - I have just purchased this upgrade, so the following comments should be viewed as preliminary. Still, some information is better than none. Having used OmniPage since its beginning, I have been irritated by the company's practice of releasing software before it has driven the bugs out. That does not appear to be a problem in this case. The software loaded cleanly and came up and works properly. As one would expect after 15 shots at it, character recognition is generally excellent. The big advance is in speed of operation. Compared to ver. 14, this version flies, which will probably be the improvement of greatest interest to users. The interface remains non-user-friendly. New users will go crazy trying to figure out how to use it, but once you do, it's worth it. ...

Tiger Woods 2005 Mac

2 stars (Not Happy With Tiger Woods 2005) - I don't understand why they felt a need to customize the golfer, right down to the size of the golfer's nostrils! It seems like an awful waste of programming and unnecessary use of the computer's resources. Why not improve the graphics which were better in TW 2003? Tiger Woods 2003 is a much better game and more realistic. TW 2003 application was 4.1 MB's and 2005 is 7.8 MB's. Who cares about the size of a golfer's head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, etc.? The graphics in TW 2003 were much better than TW 2005! ...

Cook-n with Taste of Home

4 stars (All The Bells And Whistles) - I recently got a new computer and discovered to my dismay my cookbook program was not compatable with Windows XP. I subscribe to "A Taste Of Home" and when searching for a new program, this one popped up. Installing was a breeze, but I do have a problem with having to keep the CD in the computer. I tried to do the update that I think will solve this problem, but living in the booddocks as I do, my connection speed is not the best (and that is being charitable!) and it is not stable enough to survive a long download. Other than that, the program appears to be quite good. It has taken a while to learn the ins and outs of all the various and sundry applications, but that is me, not the program. I think it might be a bit complicated for a first timer, but that really isn't a negative. Support seems to be first rate, and customer service is very responsive. If you need/want another cookbook program, I highly recommend this one. 5 stars (EXCELLENT PRODUCT-10 STARS !!!!!) - After subscribing to Taste of Home Magazine since it was first published, I was very happy to see the Taste of Home program offered by DVO Cook'n. I purchased the software and think it is the BEST recipe software available. The recipes are great and the program VERY EASY to use. Since then I have given it as gifts to several friends and they also are VERY happy with it. I have now ordered the DVO Cook'n Deluxe and Grillin software and can't wait for it to arrive. And finally I have been able to add my own recipes to this program, which is nice to have all the recipes I use together and organized. I can't say enough about DVO & Cook'n, HIGHLY recommended to any cook ! Apple Final Cut Express HD Mac

5 stars (Great Program!!) - This is a great program for your mac... I've used it in a film class the previous year and it took me a year to really get the hang of it. Because it has no tutorial I recomend you find someone who has used this and get them to give you a few lessons. 4 stars (Just starting out -- and it's daunting, but feature rich.) - I've used iMovie for several projects over the last year and a half and decided to upgrade to Final Cut Express HD when working on video of my wife's niece's wedding. Apple sells it as an a step up in features from iMovie, but -- wow! -- it give you a lot more flexibility but at a huge cost in complexity too! The Apple magic of making something simple enough to let you concentrate on the creativity and not the mechanics of the project seems missing here. IMPORTANT: An employee at the Apple Store near me confided to me that there is very little difference between Final Cut Pro HD and Final Cut Express HD. The extra $700 for the Pro version allows outputting your movie in broadcast quality -- if you don't need that, he said, you can save $700 and buy the Express version. I had just seen the employee give a short in-store class on Final Cut Pro and he said I could do EVERYTHING he did in the class EXACTLY the same way in Final Cut Express! He said the only way you could tell which is which is by the name in the menu bar! (Maybe this is common knowledge in the Final Cut Pro/Express community, but I couldn't find out exactly what was different on Apple's website.) IMPORTANT: There is NO TUTORIAL included for Final Cut Express -- and if you've never worked with "pro" video editing software, you'll probably need to buy a how-to book. I'm currently reading the Peachpit Press "Final Cut Express" book by Lisa Brenneis (ISBN: 0-321-35026-X). Saddle Up- Time To Ride

4 stars (I Love Horses) - I've been looking at this game for some time and finally bought it. I'm not sorry. I really like the game. I found that my horses have different abilities like some would rather not jump and some are better at the cross country. The area around the farm that you are aloud to ride in is fairly small but then you also have the four coarses you can practice on as well. There is also alittle interactiveness with some characters in the game that makes it a little bit more interesting. I find that having 5 horses to care for is quite difficult and can get a little borring. I can spend 30 minutes just in cleaning stalls and careing for the horses, but if you don't go to bed (in the game) you don't have to clean the stalls all the time, but if you want to compete in competetions then you need to go to bed to make the time pass. (a rock and a hard place). My horses seem to be getting sick frequetly and I'm not sure why at this piont. This is upsetting because you cannot ride when the horse is sick. Over all this game has been quite fun. I don't have a horse and probably wont beable to get one so this is fitting the bill for the moment. Palo Alto Business Plan Pro 2006

5 stars (Just what I neded) - I was looking for something to make my planning process simpler, and still very professional. I have used Business Plan Pro in the past, and I am very happy with the latest version. The increased help is wonderful and really explains issues related to the concepts behind business planning. I love the new wizards to help me get through the process, and the output is very professional with color charts and graphs. Hooray for the new version! 2 stars (Business Plan Pro 2006 Review) - I have been using BPlan Pro since 2002 when they released the version "BPlan Pro 2002", and HAD been a very satisfied user of the product. Last week I purchased (upgraded to Business Plan Pro 2006- Premier), and my experience has been pretty bad. As a rather experienced user of the product I found the following problems. New Users 1.Exporting to MS Word gives pathetic quality for chart-images. You would never want to take anything like this to a potential investor. I contacted Palo Alto Technical help and they were LEAST helpful. The person said "That's a Microsoft problem. We cannot do anything with that". If they don't expect it to show up right in Word, I wonder what program they are expecting it to show up in. (FYI, I must say here that the resolution in Adobe Acrobat was perfect, but unfortunately you CANNOT edit a PDF document unless you have the Acrobat Writer-approx $500) 2.In short, you have to work within the Bplan Pro 2006 itself, and export directly to Adobe PDF format (which gives you very little flexibility to work on the document, outside of Bplan Pro 2006). In contrast, Bplan Pro 2002 gave you the flexibility to export it anytime (any part of the plan) into MS Word and you could edit it without losing any clarity in the charts at all! (Interestingly, I asked Bplan Tech support, why they cannot do something which they easily had in their own product 4 years back!!, and the answer again was.."it has something to do with Microsoft" Old Users ...

40 Years Of The Amazing Spider-Man Win-Mac

5 stars (A Great Collection) - This is definitely a step in the right direction for Marvel Comics; I would definitely like to see more Marvel comic titles reprinted on cd-rom. It is nice to have a cost-effective option to go back and re-read all of these great classic stories, and then to also see all of the retro advertisements and even better, the Marvel Bullpens reprinted to! The only downside to this collection is that actual copies of the comics were used for the scans, and many of the older issues have tears or stains on them. It would be better to use the printer proofs for the comic portion of the issues (as is done for the Masterworks collections) and then to have inserted the scanned advertisements and bullpens from the comics. 2 stars (Transparency Problem) - This product is very nice when it works. However, I'm having the same problem as the reviewer below me. When I attempt to export the image - either by saving, draging or copying, Hemera places a transparency over the object, making the product worthless. I gave it two stars because, for the two months it worked, it worked well, however, now, it won't work at all. And as the other reviewer stated, support is nearly non-existant. 1 stars (Can't use this program) - This product offers much to chose from and I really liked the photos. However, I have yet to get this program to work right. I am able to view the photos but when I go into the the Export Wizard to save the photos, the photo has a transparency over the top of it, instead of in the background. I tried bypassing the Export Wizard by right clicking on the selected photo and saving. This also inserts the transparency over the photo. I called Hemera in Canada and they instructed me to call Encore USA in CA for support. Encore USA said they couldn't help me. Encore's technical support is "limited to crashes, error messages and lockups". I also referred to their website hoping to find help in the knowledge base or FAQ's. There was VERY little about this software and no help to be found. I wasted my money on a product I can't use and that offers no support for issues out of my control. 4 stars (Best value Hemera offers, but a few cautions) - First, if you're thinking about using these photos for print, you may wish to think again. Most objects run between 300-600 pixels in width or height, or 1-2 inches at 300 DPI. Stretch them bigger than that, and they'll start to blur and/or get jagged. Also note, that if you try to export/save an image from the Hemera Image browser and select the 300 DPI setting, the browser may stretch the graphic larger than it's actual size, causing blurring and jaggedness right out of the gate. MapPoint North American Maps 2004

5 stars (Great Mapping Program!) - MapPoint is an easy to use and powerful mapping program. I use it frequently for territory analysis for work and also use it for some personal reference and mapping projects. Defintely worth buying. 2 stars (Microsoft MapPoint 2004) - I purchased this product thinking that after using and enjoying MS Streets and Trips (since 2001), that this would be a step up. I was also looking for additional features that I knew were a bit weak in the Streets and Trips product. Boy, was I surprised. Not only is the product, no better than the Streets and Trips product, but the maps for small Canadian cities (ie.,populations of 35,000 to 100,000) were so out of date they were useless. Where I had hoped to use the enhanced features of MapPoint in my business, the abyssmal road maps made the product useless. I had hoped to also track the location of our deliveries to customers within the city and surrounding towns. Again, this was not possible due to the fact that the maps were at least 3 to 4 years out of date. Had I paid only $39.99 to $59.99 for the product, I may have kept it for use when I travel to the U.S., but for $400, I returned to product within the week (the very first Microsoft product I have ever been dissappointed with). MapPoint 2004 is a very, very marginal product and most definitely not worth paying $400 or even half that price, given the poor map qualities. I'm really dissappointed in Microsoft and their lack of attention to details and accuracy for Canadian towns and cities. Unless you are using it for U.S. locations only, do NOT purchase this product.
